Bruce Freeman, nationally known as The Small Business Professor®, was recently selected as the spokesperson for Brother International Corporation's small business survey. Freeman is an adjunct professor of management and entrepreneurship in the Stillman School of Business where he has won awards for teaching excellence for the past four years. He is also a syndicated small business columnist for Scripps Howard News Service.

In addition to his column, Freeman is the co-author of the book, Birthing the Elephant (Random House) and is a successful entrepreneur, founding ProLine Communications over 20 years ago to provide marketing and public relations services. In 2006, Freeman received the journalist of the year award (NJ) from the US Small Business Administration (SBA).

Karin Abarbanel


Karin Abarbanel is a published author, corporate marketing consultant, and expert on career issues facing women. She has four books to her credit and brings extensive marketing experience to her publishing ventures. She was selected by The Avon Corporation as spokeswoman for its “Corporation to Cottage” program. Karin has appeared on broadcast/cable TV and radio as a guest expert – and has been featured on ABC TV’s “Good Morning America”, CNBC, and WCBS, among others.

Her book, The Dollar Bill Knows No Sex (McGraw-Hill) co-authored with Wendy Rue, is the “rags-to-riches” biography of a female entrepreneur who succeeded against enormous odds, the book focuses on building a support system for success, innovative marketing and putting dreams to work. Prior to co-authoring The Dollar Bill, Karin wrote How to Succeed on Your Own (Henry Holt), which profiled the triumphs and trials of two dozen women who left the corporate world to plunge into entrepreneurship. Karin is co-author of two other how-to guides, The Art of Winning Foundation Grants and the Woman’s Work Book. She is the founding editor of Executive Female magazine, published by the National Association for Female Executives.

As an independent marketing consultant, Karin develops communications projects for leading companies, including Accenture, the Boston Consulting Group, Chase, Morgan Stanley, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Karin also served as a senior marketing director for Booz Allen Hamilton, the global management consulting firm, for more than 12 years.

Karin speaks widely on women’s issues at forums including AWED’s “Women in Business Conference, Women Inc., Financial Women of New York, Equitable Life, Columbia University, and Rutgers. Karin received her MA from Columbia University and a BA from Middlebury College.

Diana Layman


Diana Layman has shared a writing partnership with Bruce Freeman for many years and was in at the inception of “The Small Business Professor”. Diana and Bruce share the US Small Business Administration’s “Small Business Journalist of the Year Award” for New Jersey.

Diana is president of Waterview Associates, providing professional writing and marketing consulting services to a variety of business clients since 1991, and she consults regularly with Bruce about business and marketing issues, web design and article publication. She is the author of The Magic Strand ( a fantasy adventure novel for tween and young teens, which was awarded the Parent Tested Parent Approved Seal.

Ms. Layman holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in marketing and management from New York University Stern School of Business. Diana is a member of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW).
